Next as we revisit our AIP for new and old parents, numeracy, which is our third literacy & numeracy priority area. As you know, numeracy is our main focus this year. As in reading, if the children do not have the necessary numeracy skills there will be many areas of the curriculum they will not be able to access. For example if they don’t have the necessary measuring skills, they will not be able to measure quantities in science or cooking classes. As with reading and spelling we set STARS goals in mathematics for the children. Once again this will be a learning experience for the children in setting goals and being able to articulate what the goal is they are trying to achieve that we need to support them through.

What can you do to help at home? Be familiar with your children’s STARS targets in Numeracy. Numeracy is the one area parents have concerns with helping their children as the way the children do mathematics is so different from when we were at school. If you are not confident in helping with your children’s maths, see their teacher who can take you through how the children are to do their maths and how you can help. Even just encourage your children with their maths or getting them to explain to you how they are to do their maths will give them a great deal of support. And always remember that you can help them practise their number facts.
